How to Set up an E-commerce Business
Thousands of Entrepreneurs are scratching their heads on how to start. Starting an e-commerce business is not rocket science. First and foremost you need a product or service to sell. Second, you need to be a bit tech-savvy or hire someone who is. You will also need a good internet connection to work online.
It is good to start small and grow, make small progress and then scale up fast. I will summarise 3 ways to start your e-commerce business.

1. Leverage Social Media
Leverage Existing Social Media Platforms to Grow or Launch Your Brand, Product or Service. This is the easiest way to start. Social media platforms are free. What could be better than free? Just launch your page and start posting your products and services to your friends and groups. Facebook, WhastsApp, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin are some of the top social media platforms in Kenya at the moment.
2. Use a Market Place
What is a Marketplace? A market place is like a digital supermarket. These are websites which display products from different suppliers. Examples are Jumia, Masoko, Bovic and more. International marketplace sites are Amazon, Ebay and Alibaba. All this sites let vendors list their products and services.

3. Design a Killer Website
This is a hard one but it is doable. You will need to engage a web designer or learn web design. This e-commerce strategy requires some investment in terms of; buying a web address, hosting the website and designing and maintaining the platform. There are many free website builders available out there and you can get a web designer for less than Kshs 10,000 (USD 100). Ensure that your website is user-friendly for ease of purchase.
There are free tools that you can use to start up your site like;
- WordPress, Joomla, and Open Cart among others
There are also professional tools that have advanced features like;
- Shopify and Bigcommerce
You will also need to invest in marketing to push traffic to your website so that people can purchase.
